This checklist gives tips for pruning deciduous trees to keep them growing healthy.

Purchase the right pruning tools.
Bush and tree-pruning tools include:
- bypass lopper
- small hand clipper
- hedge shear
- tree pruner
A wood saw can be used, but it is not ideal because a saw is likely to leave jagged edges and cause damage to small branches.

Clean tools between use.
Soap and water will keep tools clean and may protect trees from possible bacteria.

When deciding which branches to cut, select those which grow across the tree instead of up and away from the main trunk.

Cut within 1-2 inches from the parent branch.

Always make a nice clean cut, free of jagged edges.
